I am pretty well 'photoshoperly challenged' (made that word up) In fact the most I can do is saturate really. Layers totally confuse me. In the pic attached I would like the sand to be lighter, but other than use the majic wand to select the sand then brighten it I have no idea? would love some help, but can you do it in really simple children's language.
2. would also like to know how to straighten an object. I have another pic with a post at extreme edge so it needs to be straightened.

the pic is no longer attached; it was too big, and I have no idea how to shrink it.
Thanks in advance.

If you don't know how to resize an image, you can use an image host such as Imageshack and then post the link.

BTW-layers aren't hard to understand.
Let's say you have a real paper photograph, now place a piece of glass over it and draw something on the glass, that's a layer. Place another piece of glass over that one and draw on it, that's another layer.
Although you see all the drawing on top of the picture, you haven't altered the picture itself. Remove the top piece of glass, and the drawing on it (that layer) will be gone... etc., etc.
