I'm still trying to learn the ins and outs of PS. I'm not sure what I did but when I try to use the rectangle tool, instead of the cross hairs I get a little circle. When I use the tool it creates a rectangle but when I try and fill it in, the whole canvas gets filled in instead of just the rectangle. Help???

Hi there when you use the rectangle tool if you have your capitols on it changes the look of the crosshair but the action will still remain the same.

as to why it is filling the canvas i don't know, if the selection is feathered then it will spill outside if the selection but not fill the whole canvas.

stupid question i know but how are you filling the selection? or you could try select inverse that will change the area you are working on i.e. inside or outside of the selection.

I should have said the capital lock, not capitols.

To fill the selection , I select the paint bucket tool, choose a color, and click the paint bucket icon in the drawn rectangle.

Are you using the rectangular marquee tool or the rectangular shape tool?
If you are using the shape tool you need to set it to fill pixels in its options and not make paths.
If you dont, then the whole canvas will be filled with your paint bucket.
