Hi everyone! thanks for reading...
I am trying to blend cut up pieces of a newspaper type thing into a person's face. I want the text to be visible, but not overt and blended into the skin. Any idea how to get this effect? I had tried by cloning the face and sticking the text between the two layers, which kinda worked, but i want a more "collage" kind of effect i think. Any suggestions or tutorial links would be great...thanks!

HI INKGRRL! We are both new here so WELCOME and I hope that I can be of a little help in your wishing to overlay newspaper to a face.

As a digital scrapbooking designer, I have learn to lean heavily on BLENDING MODES and the OPACITY SLIDER!

Make a duplicate copy of your photograph for safekeeping, hide the original (click on the eye to the left of the layer) and add your newspaper overlay by dragging and dropping onto photo canvas, which will create a new layer in the LAYERS PALETTE.

Making sure that you have the newspaper overlay layer highlighted, right-click your mouse and select blending modes. a LAYER STYLE window will pop up. Look to the upper-middle for BLENDING OPTIONS > GENERAL BLEEDING and play with the different options until you find something to your liking. MULTIPLY and OVERLAY usually work well, however, many of the others do as well depending on your background image. This is where I find myself doing a lot of play until it looks pleasing to my eyes! You can then adjust the opacity slider to lighten the intensity of the overlay on the face.

Another wonderful option here is to take your eraser, again making sure that you have the overlay layer highlighted, look for a soft brush in the brushes palette and then set the OPACITY to about 25% and then click over the area you wish to soften and/or lighten.

HAVE FUN! Big Wink

Hugs,
Linda

P.S. I've added an image real quickly. Just a photo I had open in PS and I applied a newspaper overlay that I had created at an online site. It might be showing a little lighter here than on my screen in PS, but it gives you an idea of what you can achieve with blending modes, the opacity slider and a soft brush at 25% opacity. I ended up using color burn and reduced the opacity to 80%. I erased around the eyes, nose and mouth and, of course, erased the overlapping paper image to fit the contour of the face. I really hope this is helpful. I'm not the greatest at "on the fly" explanations! Big Grin

HI!
thanks so much for your reply! I am excited to go home and try these techniques--I've been getting discouraged. But some one who does a lot of collage is exactly who i was hoping to run into here! thanks so much! I may be picking your brain often as i get more into this!
