Could some explain what a gradient does in terms I could easily understand. I grip everything is photoshop except the purpose of a gradient. Thank you for your help.

At lower opacities and set to foreground to transparent, the gradient tool can be used to blend color corrections, tints, other images, or any kind of effect into, or out of, images.

I think the gradient tool is pretty much useless at its default settings of 100% opacity and foreground to background.

Try using it at 35%, foreground to transparent. Using a layer mask, blend one layer into another by pulling several gradients at slightly different lengths and directions.
