Simple. Open the png file you posted in PS. Look in the Layers palette and see if you only have one layer called "background." If so, double-click it and OK the default layer name. You've just changed it from a (restricted) background to a true layer.
Now, go over to the toolbox and get the Magic Wand tool (near top right). Hold down Shift and click in each of the background white areas. When they are all selected, just press delete and they're gone, leaving transparency.
Now, use Save for Web and select gif, and make sure transparency is enabled. This is a simple image, ideally suited for gif. Now you can use it in any application which supports transparency.
