I select 'U' and then draw a 'shape layer'.

What do I have at this point? It looks like there is a background color with the shape as a mask over it in the layers palette. Am I understanding this correctly?

If I click on the 'shape mask' the border around it disappears. If I click it again it reappears. What does this border signify?

I notice that the 'Create new shape layer' and 'Set change properties...' toggle off/on as I click the mask as well. What's going on here?

Any good tutorials on shapes/masks? It seems a little non-intuitive.

-Thx

Hi kilik,
You are quite right - vector shapes are "fill" layers shaped with vector masks.

Shape outline is called "path". By clciking on vector mask thumbnail you activate/deactivate the path and vector mask. While a vector mask is active, you can edit it, for example, draw new shapes by using "Add to shape" or "Subtract from shape" buttons in the Options bar.

Alternatively, you may use "Paths" drawing mode to create empty vector outline and then convert it to shape layer filled with solid color, gradient, or pattern (Layer > New Fill Layer > ...).

Hope this helps.
