I'm trying to figure out how to add a simple black or white, solid border around photos. Does anyone know how to do that without distorting the image?

Hi delnmelb,
I'd suggest using a layer style.
First, make sure the layer isn't a 'background' layer. If it it, hold down the ALT key and double click it it turn it to layer0.
Now go to Layer -> Layer Style -> Stroke.
Make sure the strokes position is set to 'Inside' and choose a colour and size that suits your image.
