If you want to reduce the blacks in the image to greys perhaps you could use the output sliders of the levels command to 'dim' them. Use an adjustment layer so not to destroy the original pixels. I'm not so sure this will save ink though, most inkjet printers will lay down droplets of colour inks when producing grey and use a dithering pattern to fool the human eye. You'll usually notice a colour cast in the final print.
