How to apply created blending options to layer?

Hi

I am following this tutorial and am stuck.

I go in blending options and do as he said in "Step 1: Build a Base" but I can't apply my newly created blended options to my layer.

Quote" Once you apply the changes to your rounded rectangle, you will have something that looks like Fig 1-4. "
Can't do that above??? My button stays with the original color it was created.

Make sure the blend mode in the gradient overlay is set to normal
