Hello, my name is Timothy Sassone, I am new to Photoshop and relatively new to graphics in general (did some pixel art for my programming projects and some GIMP stuff for banners and such). I am in need of some help. I have been messing around with Photoshop and have found myself in need of alpha masks. I am currious if there is a way to use on layer as an alpha mask for another. If so, how? And if not, is there a way to use alpha masks (and if so, how?)?.

I am using Photoshop CS3.

Thank you for your time,
Timothy Sassone.

Hi Timothy,
Try the following:

- In the Layers palette, place the "shaping" (e.g. text) layer under the "fill" (e.g. photo) layer

- [Alt]-click the border between the two layers to create clipping mask

Thank you! That works perfectly.

I only have one question, How well does this work with other layers? I.E. will grays show up as 50% transparent over other layers?

Thanks again for the quick reply!

No, painting with grayscale colors applies to "layer masks" - quite different masking technique.
