Having trouble with the patch tool and healing brush. When I use either, the corrected area seems to feather in rather than paste the exact color that is selected. I have only Source selected for both the patch tool and healing brush. I've tried Transparent for the patch tool. I lasso, alt click the target area to fix and then drag over to the color I want for patch tool. I alt click the target color for the healing brush and then paint. I must be doing something wrong. I've attached an example. The spinter's right hand is patch tool, left hand is the healing brush.

Hi there
It sounds like you're after the clone stamp tool rather than the patch and heal brushes. The clone stamp tool copies the exact pixels from the source point (which you can set by ALT clicking).
Give it a try!

Neat. Thanks for the tip. I've tried it, and it's another tool under my belt. The problem is, I'm being stubborn about this. I've had the healing and patch tools work in the past. I've had it work on a different machine, just not this one. This is why is going to wind up being a SUE (stupid user error) when I finally find the solution. :-)

What are you trying to do with the image? Are you attempting to take out this chaps hands?

Sorry. Yes, I'm trying to take out the sprinter's hands. Similar to hiding zits, but it was the only picture I had.

I see, well the image you've posted looks like you've been using the healing brush without any selections active (or a feathered selection at best). You're on the right track though, make a selection, like along the white line, and then heal the area inside. You've got to be careful with the healing and patch tools though because they try to blend the new pixels in with the existing edges.

Matt,
You're exactly right. Patch tool does feather. Makes sense, since you don't want a hard-edged splotch. The trick is to lasso well beyond the edge of what you're trying to cut out. Also, the healing brush works better with a Mode of Replace instead of Normal. Thanks for the solution.
