How to make sig words flash in CS3 ?

hi, i know that you have to create a new layer and add a gradiant to it, then move it to one side and then group. however, i do this and but the layer of the grad does not dissapear and then i got to dup it on the image ready bar and it does nothing. If theres a better way to do this then please tell me ? many thanks craig
