Hello, I am trying to put a simple rectangle around the photos (as can be seen in the screen shot). I select the Rectangle Tool and then select the Shape Layers button and Create New Shape Layer from the top toolbar. I can achieve this as seen in the screenshot but unless the Shape Layer is selected and in particular the Vector Mask Thumbnail, I can't see the rectangle on the image. And when I go to Save For Web I can't see it either. How do I ensure the rectangle is always visible, especially when Saving For Web. Please help as it's driving me mad!

Hello,
Indeed, you can't see white rectangle over white background. The thin outline you can see while the shape layer being selected is just non-printable visual aid.
If you need a real outline, add to your shape layer "Stroke" effect (Layer > Layer Styles > Stroke)
Good luck
