Hi there
You just need to create a new document with a transparent background, then save the image in a format that supports transparency - something like the PSD format (if you're taking the image to another Adobe app for editing), PNG-24 or TIFF. Don't save as a JPEG though, they don't support transparent pixels - and instead convert them to white (or the matte colour).
