|
|
I'm staring at two pictures, one in photoshop and another of the exact same photograph I saved into JPG...and the red color of the JPG file is desaturated quite a bit compared to that open in Photoshop. When I close everything out and reopen the jpg file in Photoshop it's saturated again. What's the deal? |

What s/w are you using to display the JPEG file? This is quite a big subject but Photoshop opens images according to both the tagged colour profile. If there isn't one then PS will use the default colour profile specified in your colour settings.
Hope this helps (a little)

s/w means software. Browsers and viewers use sRGB color space, while Photoshop displays edited images either in sRGB (narrower) or Adobe RGB (wider) gamma.
If you edit images mainly for Web, open Color Settings dialog (Edit > Color Settings) and choose sRGB as your default color space

Thanks for your help! Yes, I actually have it set to Adobe RGB (as that's what I shoot in). Is there any other reason it would desaturate? I notice my 'settings' is set to custom, should i set it to "North America Prepress 2"?
edit: or does the adobe rgb cause it to desaturate when saving as a jpg? I don't see why it would, but I'm not familiar enough with this.. |

So if I'm working in Adobe RGB and my intention is to display these on the web, the picture is going to be desaturated no matter what? |

Yes, Web surfers will see your images in sRGB gamma. So, you'd better preview them in the same way. _________________ Andrei Doubrovski

So is Adobe RGB only useful for printing? |

Pretty much yes, it contains a wider range of colours than the srgb colour space. If you're using a high-end printer you can print colours that are unavailable in srgb by using the Adobe rgb colour space. _________________ Matt
