I have a jpeg image with a white background. How can make the white background transparent?

Hello,
- Just select it with the Magic Wand and press [Delete] key

Just in case you didn'ty know, JPEG doesn't support transparency. So, you will need to export the edited image to GIF or PNG format (File > Save for Web).

Alternatively, you may create transparency right in the "Save for Web" dialog (i.e., without selecting and deleting white areas in Photoshop). Just map the white color to transparent (screenshot)
