Hi

I am quite new to photoshop and am working through a few tutorials. In one of them it asks me to draw a line. Now I thought this would be really easy.

I clicked the Line tool and tried drawing it where the tutorial said, but all i got was a selected section and in the layers window it showed something about a mask. According to the tutoria it shouldn't do this.

I undid it and tried again, still the same problem. I tried deleting the mask and the work area just goes black.

Can someone please tell me how to create a Line without the whole mask businees.

P.S: I am using Photoshop CS on Windows XP.

not sure what specifically you are trying to do, but there are a few ways to draw lines.
1. use the brush tool (B). hold the shift key to draw perfectly straight horizontal/vertical lines.

2. use the marquee tool M. this makes the line straight but you will have to use the paint bucket to fill with desired color.

3. use the Line tool U. in order to actually use this as a colored line, you will have to make it a selection by going to your layers pallet, click on paths and click on the little button at bottom that says, "load path as selection".

hope this helps

I was trying to draw lines across a shape on a different layer.

The last one solved the problem. Thanks a lot.

Hi halbarad,
The Line Tool creates vector shapes. Indeed, in the Layers palette they depicted as fill layers with vector mask.

If you don't like the line's appearance, just hide its edges [Ctrl+H] or select other layer. Also, at any moment you can rasterize your line (Layer > Rasterize > Shape)
