I'm trying to create rollover images - 2 for each navigation button. I'm using Photoshop CS3. The normal state is white text; the rollover state is red text. The help menu suggests making rollovers this way:
###
1. Use layers to create primary and secondary images. Create content on one layer, then duplicate the layer and edit it to create similar content ...
2. Use the Save For Web & Devices dialog box to save rollover images in a web-compatible format and with an optimized file size...
3. After creating a rollover image set in Photoshop, use Dreamweaver to place the images on a web page and automatically add the JavaScript code for the rollover action.
###
I'm stumped on Step 2. How do I save a layer as an image? If I click on the layer in the layer pallette and go to File > Save As, it prompts me to save the entire .psd file, not just the individual layer.
Thanks for any help.

first you save 1 layer (turn off all layers other then the one you need so save)
then go to File > Save For Web & Devices : There you can save has GIF, JPEG etc
When you are done, go back and turn that layer off then turn the other on, repeat the save and there you have your two files one that you can use for your normal and rollover states. _________________ _____________________

1. I also have my comp divided with 3 slices, and even though I set them to hide in the Save for Web & Devices dialog (and turned off the all the layers, too), I ended up with 3 .gif images (the 3 slices, I think). Should I delete the slices, or can I turn them off somehow?
2. For Save As Type, I chose "Images Only (*.gif)." Was this correct?
3. By "turn off layers," do you mean just click on the eye next to each layer I don't want to save? (This is what I did.)
Thank you! |

When you get the window to save for web you can either select what slices you want to save or you can save all, look at the drop down when saving at the bottom.
But if you dont want the slice and just want 1 layer save
close all your layers turn the one you need, go to File > Save As > give it a name then select JPEG you will get only that layer
Would that help, let me know _________________ _____________________

That's correct: I don't want to save any slices - I just want to save the visible layer.

This is what I did before and I ended up with three large gifs, which look about the size of the 3 slices. In the save for web drop down menu about slices, the only options listed are: All Slices, All User Slices, & Selected Slices. It seems I need a 4th option: No Slices.
I also just tried this: I deleted all of the slices and repeated your steps - it saved a gif the size of my entire .psd file. The only thing visible in the gif is the layer I had visible, but it obviously didn't save just that layer.
This is the part of the .psd file I'm dealing with. Each word is it's own layer. I also made a duplicate layer of each word and changed the text to red. This will be the rollover state (see Images for an example). Perhaps there's an easier way to go about doing this.

Ok, lets see
http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=11E9Re8yRSxHAY7uXuzpxnezzwtDL1
If you dont want to use slices try this not sure if its the fastest way
1. You have your layers
2. Turn all your layers off and leave the one that you need ON
3. go to Save for Web
4. when you get that screen make sure you save as GIF and Transparency is checked, save it
5. preview it and you have only that piece saved
Now you can place that piece in your work, so if you have a rollover you create another piece with a different color and when making the code for that botton you call 1 for the normal state and the other for the onrollover state.

It's still saving the entire area, not just the visible layer as it's own graphic. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that the layer is only text?
In Photoshop, this is what it looks like with all but the desired layer hidden:
In Save for Web & Devices screen, this is what it looks like:
After I save it, this is the resulting .gif file:
###
Also, someone else suggested that since I'm only dealing with text for the rollover, I don't need to bother creating two images; I can simply code the font color change (from white [normal state] to red [hover state] in Dreamweaver using the :hover property. (Regardless, I'd still be interested in learning how to save a certain layer as it's own graphic.) |

you might want to edit that in fireworks, I do that to restrict the area or to save just that specific area.
