Hello.
I'm trying to figure out a way to take a pattern and apply it to a photograph of a head so that the pattern conforms to its contours. I've included a photo of the effect I'm looking for (taken from this month's ArtForum magazine).
Any suggestions on how to do this? I'm quite new to photoshop btw, but a willing learner nevertheless.
Thanks,
John |

There are many ways to do this, but here is one.
1.Open the image you want to work on
2.With your pen tool (ensure you have paths selected)
3.start tracing the area you want to mask, when you are done close the path
4.right click or and click on Make selection
5.save your selection (Select > save selection) give it a name - in case you need that selection later is easy to load it instead of re-making it again.
6. File > place (select the image you want on top)
7. Select > Load Selection (from the drop down click the name you made earlier) click ok
8. Click on the Add vector Mask on the layers window
the top picture should mold the figure of your selection
Now change the blending mode to like Multiply (you can select different blending modes and opacity until you get the blending you want)
Hope it helps.

Thank you for your help...unfortunately I can't seem to get this effect and I feel a bit silly.
"Step 8> Click on the Add vector Mask on the layers window"
I can't seem to find this option (I'm using cs3) either in the layers menu or the window. I'm assuming it's not the same option as "add layer mask".
Sorry if I'm missing something really obvious.
