Cannot select all channels

Well, I'm running 7.0, and I'm trying to put a reflective layer on an AK-47 for Insurgency, but when I create the alpha 1 channel, fill it with white, I can select the RGB, which selects all of the standard channels, but when I hold shift and select Alpha 1, I de-select the standard channels and only have alpha 1 selected. Is this a version issue? Is it time to upgrade? P.S, this is after a fresh install. The only plug-in is the NVIDIA Tools.
