CS3 Gradient Issue

Hello. I could not find an answer to this question online anywhere so i figured i would try here to see if i would get lucky.

i just got the CS3 creative suite and am having an issue with photoshop. I am trying to do a simple gradient and its not working. Heres what i do.

i take my image and put a layer mask over it. I then select the gradient tool and pull it where i want it. Nothing happens. A gradient never appears.

If i remove the layer mask and and try again. the image turns all black or white. depending on what i have my main color set as. Im not sure what the deal it. Its very frustrating.
