I have two graphic design questions. One regarding shading/effects, and the other regarding logo design. Felt it would be easier to just include in the same email

FIRST QUESTION
I have this idea for this cover. It will be all black, and have a flower breaking through the ground. I don't know how to do an effect where this flower would be illuminated, but surrounded by complete darkness. I have some ideas for lighting, and the gradient effect. What I need help with is highlighting the ground. Maybe illuminating the ground dimly so you can faintly see the flower breaking through the ground. Does that make sense? Anyone have any suggestions?

SECOND QUESTION
I am new to logo design. I have Photoshop CS, & Fireworks 8. Given these tools, how can I create a logo similiar to the style on handango.com? I have not had formal training, so I do not know the terms, nor techniques used. I have seen this type of logo design used with various companies. For a person who has no freehand artistic ability, how would I create something of this nature with shapes/cropping? Are there any tutorials on this?

I don't really understand your first question but for your second question, you can try www.goodtutorials.com or you can simply google 'logo design in photoshop' and see what that brings up.

www.goodtutorials.com seems to be down right now. You should try some other sites like pyropixel.com and stuff in that nature. goodtutorials should be up soon.

Ok, forget how I described it. Picture a flower growing up through concrete. That is the effect I am looking for.

Oh, well do you want the flower coming up with the view from the side so the flower is vertical or make the view come from the top?

I think it would look good with somewhere inbetween. You can also illuminate the flower by making the flower on one layer and then makeing an outerglow, that is the simple way to do that though.

My advice to you is, just mess around with the filters, blending options, etc. That is how I learned a lot of the stuff I know.

This is how I see the idea, I used a photo of cracked earth to make a brush, used free transform for the perspective then added my "flower" (ok I couldn't find a decent shot of a single flower! lol) not perfect but it gives you another idea. Wayne

Here's my crack at it (no pun intended)

I don't know how to do the lighting effects, and I didn't know if you wanted a arial view (no stem) or a view from the ground...it kinda doesn't look real to me but hopefully it gives you something else to work with

Where did you get the ground crack image from? You guys are giving me some ideas.

I am trying to make a flower come from a crack in the (black) ground. Sort of like those old movies we used to watch in science class when they sped up the growth of a plant. You know how the soil cracks as the bud pushes through the ground? Or like a hand coming up through the ground. I want the flower to appear like it is pushing up through the ground, but the ground is all black.

Maybe I can find an image of some cracked blacktop or something? I dunno.
