I am trying to make a photo look as if it's been painted. I know that it has something to do with the art history brush. I have looked in the Classroom in a Book and Photoshop Artistry.
When I try it, I first make a copy of the photo. Then, try to transform it. Nothing happens to the photo even though I have the original layer selected. I try selected either layer with no luck. I do not understand the two tutorials that I've read.
Any suggestions?

First off for the art history brush to work you have to pick a history state for it to work from, do that by clicking the little box on the history palette just left of the state you want to use.
My personal favorite for an art effect, is to create a dup layer, then use filter/artistic/ palette knife at about 2 4 2 settings (it will vary with image size though) then lower the layer opacity untill your happy, this was about 35% I think. Wayne

I have a suggestion:
You are right in saying that you have to copy a layer but from there on it makes no sense.
in this photo I just used the paint duabs filter with a layer mask and the layer opacity set to 75%. You can use any filter to createe the effect you want. Note: I used the brush set to black to mask out the areas do not want to be effected. Black is transparent and white is opac (Solid - non see through) when dealing with layer masks - and if that is the case, then what is 50% grey - remembering that Photoshop is comprised of 255 shades of grey from black to white.
