When using the clone tool to eliminate scratches, etc, from B&W photographs, I find most of the time the tone colour of the sample and paste tool/cursor is so similar to the background that it appears invisible, so I can't tell where it is. Is there a way to change the color of the tool, like red or green, to make it more visible?

You could put a Color Fill layer above the image (you would have to convert a Greyscale image to RGB first) and set its blend mode to something... maybe Screen or Overlay. Make sure too that the caps lock key is not on.
