I'm going back to school in January for a 2 yr degree in graphic design (I previously went for programming for a year and decided to change direction). I was curious what goes on at the work place.
What are your responsibilities and what are you required to do.
My areas of interest:
Web Deisgn
Magazine Covers
Advertising
Just to name a few. |

I'm a graphic designer for a financial education company. I'm responsible for:
Print Design (Brochures, Books, Mailers, various advertisements, etc...)
Web Design (I design the graphics, lay it out in HTML and write the style sheets before I hand it off to my programmers)
A large part of my job is user interface. It's quite a task to make an educational program that people can intuitively use without having to read any directions. I'm also involved in the development of our projects. I meet with our various business partners across the country and plan the direction we want our materials to move in. One very valuable thing I've learned is how programmers think. I can't write any programs, but I can make an interface and layout that usually makes things easier for the programmers. This is a very valuable skill for a graphic designer, because it makes you a team player (the programmers tend to like you a bit more too...).
Was that what you were looking for? _________________ Best Regards,

Yes thats what I'm looking for.
I'm just trying to get an ideal of what to expect when ever I land a job in graphic design. And just out of curiousity did you go to school for graphic design and if so how long did it take you to land this kind of job after graduating? |

My opinion about design schools is somewhat unorthodox. I think school for design is a pretty huge waste of time, unless you are at a top-notch design school. Don't get me wrong, it always looks good to have a degree, but the experience is so much more important. I dropped out of college twice to pursue my job, and I'm already more successful than most design college graduates. There's just so much that a college can't teach you. I would strongly suggest making your area of knowledge very broad. The more you know or even just understand, the better. There are so many possibilities out there, and it's always good to know what can be done. It's also very important to know what you don't know. Don't pretend to understand things that you've merely dabbled in. Just keep expanding what you know. You should never be bored as a designer. There's always something to make and there's always new things to learn. _________________ Best Regards,

Tell me about it, from the time I get home from work til the time I go to bed I'm on the computer playing with photoshop. I've recently started to learn Adobe Premier and After Effects. I've always been on the computer learning something new. The internet is a wonderful thing, it's my window of oppurtunities...lol |

Web Design is one of the biggest things I'm envolved in. I actually had my first stab at it while back when I was just learning HTML. Once I was kind of getting comfortable with HTML a friend of mine came to me and told me one of his family members was looking for a web site for his company, so I immediately took the challenge not knowing a whole lot about PS. Anyways I ended up making $500 from this job. It was a good experience for me and I realized this is what I wanted to do so I've been trying to learn as much as I possibly can. I haven't actually done any coding in about a year, I've been spending most of my time learning PS and new techniques and these forums has helped alot. |
