OK. Call me stupid, I don't mind but I have been living under a rock since PS was invented. I am just learning PS CS3 and am at a complete loss with this. I am an artist and photographer and know how to use PS somewhat when going to the file menu and selecting a file to use. What I need to find out...and I'm sure it's simple..is this...How do I start with a blank background and simply make a colored background? I've tried everything and can't get it right!
What I want to do is start with no files selected and give the page a royal blue background that I will enhance, add affects and toggle back and forth between PS and Illustrator. Please help!!!
Thanks.

Hi shandralebru,
Go to File>New, and make sure you start with a transprent background, see attached image.
Now click the forground swatch in the toolbox on the left hand side of the screen. Choose the colour you want and then press OK. Now press ALT DELETE at the same time to fill the screen with the active foreground colour.
Also, quick tip if you're working between Photoshop and Illustrator - change the layer to a smart object. You can then open up the embedded Photoshop file in illustrator and go backwards and forewords as much as you want.
Hope that helps
