I'm trying to find a (the) correct way of drawing irregular parallel lines using the pen tool, think of a curled hosepipe.

The method I am using it at the moment is to draw a path along the centreline, stroke said path with a bold colour using the brush tool, (experimenting with brush width) then delete the original path.
Next I "magic wand" my painted line and turn the selection into a path, remove the two ends, et voila !! Two (roughly) parallel paths. But not as smooth as I would really like, but will do for now.
Is there a correct or better way to do this so I can reduce the number of anchor points and consequently make my paths smoother?

Draw the line the pen tool. Now take the Path Select Tool (black) touch the path at any point and press the alt key. You'll see a plus sign, now drag and it will duplicate the path. Do this as many times as you wish.
