Hi
I'm doing this tutorial and it says to make a path around an object of interest in a photo. The reason we do this is to effect the object some way with some tool later on in the tutorial. Well my object of interest is a lady with headphones on. I want to include the headphones, but there is a gap between her head and the headphones, i.e. there is background there that I don't want to include. Another example would be say you want to trace a path around someone standing up in the photo and they have their hands on their hips and facing front on into the camera. Well you dont want to include the back ground in the closed gap made by the arm and thier body.
So how do you trace a path around the object and not include the background in the hollow surrounded by the arm and the body?

Hi David, me again :)

I forget which version you have, but it's probably the same in most.

Draw the path around your lady first. Then look in the Options Bar for the Pen Tool. There are five little tiny icons, of which the first will be selected. You need to choose the third one "subtract from shape area", then draw the inner bit of the path.

Gosh, I don't even know if I'm making sense. It's a bit hard to explain.
