Confused? I am Frown I have a raw image of a person. Being raw, it's in inches, 13.6 in by 13.587 in @ 300 ppi. I need to crop it down to her head and shoulders, and make it so that the image is 45 mm tall, and 35 mm wide, and her face has to be (from her hair line to her chin) 32 mm. I can do this no problem when it's in inches, because CS defaults to inches. Now, going from inches to cm to mm......ARGHHHHH!!!!!! Not my cup of tea.

I need to crop the photo, and drag it onto another canvas when I have guide lines set exactly 32mm apart (top to bottom) and keep recroping the photo until her face is 32mm (hence the guide lines). My problem is that when I crop at 35 x 45 mm, then drag it onto the new canvas (also in mm) it is WAY to large, as if in to say after I crop it, the dimensions default back to inches, even though I cropped it by mm, and the new canvas it cm.

I'll post some screen shots. No picking on my stick figure drawings, as I'm sure this lady wouldn't like her mugshot posted all over the net ;)

Not quite sure I understand your problem Steve. Make sure the second canvas you drag the cropped image to is set at same 300 ppi.

and (my soapbox again.. ;))
Remember going in from one res doc to different res doc, Photoshop does not honor the physical dimensions of a pasted image. Photoshop ONLY honors the pixels. It doesn’t care about inches, cm, mm or even ppi for that matter. Just pixels.
In fact, just start thinking in pixels from now on. It is much easier. Ignore the inches and ppi. That is just secondary information Photoshop sends to the printer to describe how big the pixels will be when printed.

As Chadland say check your docs are all the same pixle per inch, and for inches or mm thats easy to change, go to edit/preferences/units rulers and select the one you want there. Wayne

Even easier (though I don't think it changes the Preference setting) is to right+click (cntrl+click Mac) on the ruler in the document window. You'll get a contextual menu of measurement choices.

The new canvas was set for 300 ppi; The raw image was 300 ppi; when I cropped the raw image, it was 300 ppi, and it was printed at 300 ppi, so I know that the resolution of each canvas was matching up. What I didn't understand was why I would hit ctrl+N and set everything to metric (cm) except the ppi of the image then hit enter. When I would check the dimensions of the image (alt+I, I or Image>Image size) it would say it was all in inches Evil I didn't want inches, I wanted cm so that I could drag guidelines and set them 32 mm apart so I could drag and drop my cropped image and size this lady's head (hairline to bottom of chin had to be EXACTLY 32 mm). This way, if it was to big or small, I'd just recrop the image and drag and drop again and again until I get the size right (usually only takes 2-4 tries Big Wink ). Where I was getting stumped was that the new canvas I created was supposed to be in cm, but after it was open it was in inches. Oh, and I was cropping the image in mm also, so that when I dragged it to the new canvas it would match up with the metric system for the new canvas being in cm.

Oh, and the fix was right clicking on the rulers like Wayne said and choosing cm. I swear it's all the simple stuff I miss......make a rocket out of chewed bubble gum and a ball point pen-->no problem! Right click on the rulers to change the settings-->DOH! I should just stick with the K.I.S.S. rule.....

Thanks guys!
