Trying to follow a tutorial on Youtube. Have text on black background. Duplicated it twice. Go to New volume from layers as per instructions. Then every time I try to use a 3D tool the whole document goes to the transparency chequerboard pattern when I click and move the tool, the text is scarcely visible And whatever the tool I pick it won't work. It always goes to the chequerboard as soon as I click and move. I've checked and rechecked the steps taken and I've looked everywhere in 3D tutorials but can't find any mention of this. Anybody PLEASE....

Do you have a link to the tutorial? I'm still away from Photoshop at the moment, but I'm sure forum members would be happy to check the sequences for you.

I assume also that you have the prerequisite hardware to use the 3D functionality of Photoshop. I know it sounds obvious but...

Hi Hermit, thanks for quick reply. here is the link, I know some tutes can be a bit iffy but this one seems quite professional.

Not sure what you mean by the requisite hardware. I'm running an iMac OS 10.5. The CS5 Extended is a genuine copy from bought from Amazon and installed with a genuine serial number. Purchased two weeks ago. I've been getting used to the difference from PS 7.0 which I had before. I'm not a professional just a hobbyist. But I just enjoy pottering about with this stuff.
Cheers.

Gari, still away from Photoshop at the moment so it's going to have to be a guess at best, unless someone else jumps in to save the day.

When I asked about your hardware I was referring specifically about your graphic card. Some cards cannot access the full capability of Photoshops 3D functions, I wondered if yours was one such card.

On the tutorial site that you link, I read most of the comments and picked out a couple of things that may/may not be of use to you. Does your graphic card appear on this list? Tested Video Cards Adobe. Also noted was a suggestion for resetting your preference file, although in truth I see no reason for this to work (stranger stuff has happened at sea mind!).

I presume you selected both the text layers as suggested and still had no joy (ie: had 3 text layers with just the top two selected/highlighted)?

Back home tommorow and maybe can sort something out if you are still stuck (perhaps can't), let us know how it goes or if you find an answer or indeed have another question.

You're probably looking for hardware which supports "OpenGL". It may not be what's causing this problem, but it's something to eliminate. Might be worth checking certain other Photoshop features are working for you.

There's some info here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405745.html

Hi guys (or gals as the case may be). Not too well up on the hardware situation but this is what I have,

This is the info about the video card.

In Photoshop > preferences > performance , the GPU settings box reads:-

Detected Video Card:
ATI Technologies Inc.
ATI Raedon HD 4850 OpenGL Engine.

The Enable OpenGL Drawing box is ticked. In advanced setting the Mode is ‘Normal’.
There is a long pop out description of all the features enabled, quote
‘Enable OpenGl Drawing activates certain features and interface enhancements. It does not enable OpenGL on already open documents.
Features: Rotate View Tool, Birdseye Zooming, Pixel grid, flick panning And so on and so on .....… ending with Adobe Repousse .unquote
Lots of enhancements including the 3D axis widget (Which I had to begin with but which has now disappeared).
It’s all very frustrating.

I do not have the same problem with the 'New Volume from Layers' being greyed out like most of the other comments on the tute site. Repousse works OK too. I'm a bit fed up as I had to wait a longtime to be able to afford this and now it's throwing wobblies.

I hardly use 3D, so it was the only suggestion I could think of. I guess if those other features are working for you then it looks like you have the right hardware. I wish I could help more, but hopefully somebody will know more than I do.
