What sort of memory problems, what error message are you getting?
I read something about page swapping with windows if Photoshop is allowed too much ram, and that it can actually slow down performance. |

I have noticed this with my new system too.
Xp system has 2gb ram and photoshop tells me 1700mb is available.
vista system has 4gb ram and photoshop tells me 1600mbs is available. ( 32 bit vista will only recognize 3gb anyway ).
I'm guessing its a 32bit issue - it's a real pain as I'm working on very large (up to 4gb with layers etc) images and the extra ram could make a difference to my workflow. |

I read somewhere that you can use BCDEdit (google it) in vista command line to free up more available ram.
I haven't the ball to mess with my system just yet though. |

It looks like photoshop, as a 32bit program, will only see 2gb on a 32bit OS.
I personally really need to access more as my working files are 4gb and increasing.
I'm going to to try Vista 64bit (I have all the signed drivers-essential) this should allow PS to see around 3gb - I'll also install a raptor 36gb 10K drive for a scratch disk.....It seems alot of hassle for an extra 1.3gb. But, I'm curious now and want to see if it works. |

Ok...Just installed vista 64bit and it's great. The Added ram does make a difference - I now use the old vista32 hard drive (raptor 74gb 10k) as a scratch disk which also adds to performance.
I had no problems what so ever installing vista 64 despite all the stuff on the web - just goes to show that people only post when there is a problem. Giving an unbalanced view.
PS now see's 3.3gb ram instead of 1.6/1.7gb and there is only slight brush delay at 18000x12000pixels (60 x 40inch) @300dpi using large brushes 400+ pixels wide. I now looking forward to the Photoshop 64bit version.
I'm well impressed.
If you need performance on large format image creation / editing then 64 bit is the way to go. |

I went for Vista Ultimate 64 bot oem ( around £110 ). I'm sure the 64 bit premium version is just as good.
If you go for it, make sure all hardware is supported - 32bit software will run fine. All my software and games have no problem at all.
Also, if you decide to update to 64bit I would recommend installing on a hard drive separate to your 32 bit system so you can go back if you run into problems.
However, I must state that my install was flawless not a single hiccup. It all installed in 20mins with a further 40 - 50 mins to install the updates / drivers. Vista found all of my hardware drivers - all I had to install manually was my drawing tablet and scanner....sweet! |

You can try prioritizing the application in the processes. The change shouldn't be significant, but you should do that if you use that single application.
In my experience, it didn't do much with Photoshop, but it does a big difference when you use it with high ressource using applications. I mainly use this function when I do intense peer-to-peer uploads or downloads (I usually disable everything else on my system, IE, Desktop Manager, Windows Exploer... everythinhg).
If, in your case, photoshop uses a tremendous amount of ressources, it MIGHT do something.
How much ram are you using (in K) for your 18000*12000 file? Also, if you have Vista Ultimate x64, why do you only see 3.3GB? You should see your entire set (or were you talking about the application?). _________________ Just so you know what I have, and that I do not have to enter it everytime...
