Hello everyone,

I have a psd file with lots and lots of separate layers. I want to export only some of these layers as individual image files. I am aware of the Export Layers to Files option under the Files>Scripts menu. However there are some issues I have had with this. One, this exports every single layer in addition to some random white backgrounds. Two, when it exports a layer to an image, the image is not the exact size of the layer, rather the size of the whole psd canvas. Third, there is no option to save as a .png file. Finally, sometimes it has trouble with a layer name and just cannot save it at all.

So basically, I am looking for a way to save individual layers in a single .psd file as images, with the image sizes being the same size as actual layers. And preferably to be able to save them as .png files.

I know this is a lot to ask for but if anyone knows anything please post!

Thanks - Sina

Hi Sina,
Record to action the following sequence:
- Load current layer opacity to selection (ctrl-click its thumbnail)
- Copy selected area (Edit > Copy)
- Create new transparent document
- Paste the copied pixels (Edit > Paste)
- Save it as PNG (File > Save As)

After assigning to the action a keyboard shortcut you can export layers with a single click.

There may be file naming issues. So, enable in the action interaction for the "Save" command (click "dialog" cell).

Andrei thank you so much. I'm not quite sure what you meant by the last two lines you wrote there, but besides that this works like a charm. Thanks again.

Actually now that I try this method, there is one thing wrong. When I press paste, it doesn't paste the layer, but it just pastes a white layer. I fixed that by just dragging the layer, so its not really much of a problem.

Sina,
- Select your action in the Actions palette
- From the palette menu, open "Action Options"
- Assign a keyboard shortcut
- Now you can play the action with a single click without even opening Actions palette
