Jpeg vs. File format. Help!

I am new to PS...When I edit a RAW file and intend to save it in jpeg format, for some reason it is being saved as a file format and my computer does not recognize it and I am not able to open and view it once it is saved in this format. I haven't had this problem before and I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. I appreciate your help!! Thank You!
