I would like my drop down menu background to be transparent so that you can see through it and see what's behind it when the menu submenu drops down.

I have tried making a gradient image with a transparent background but when i choose save for web and attempt to save it as a .gif, it isn't transparent. No Transparency is checked to the right so if i choose diffusion transparency it's really ugly. Can someone help me with this please? Thanks.
