How do you make a photo fade to transparent in photoshop? I am attempting to let the orange edges of the image slowly fade into the black background of the webpage.

Add Mask>Gradient Tool> white to black> Drag over mask in direction of fade.

If you want an image to fade into a web page, you need to be aware that photos in jpeg format do not support transparency.

Two ways to achieve what you want:
1) Get your jpeg photo to fade to the same colour as the webpage background (e.g black). This isn't transparent, but it will look transparent (unless you change the background of the web page).
or
2) Don't use a jpeg, use a PNG or a GIF (see the Save for Web) option

To achieve the actual fade, you can use a gradient. This is the tool beneath the paint bucket.
