Hi, I've seen this effect used in many photographs and in film on television;
------

------
I mean the way the sky darkens to black as you look further up to the top of the picture.

And also this;

------
Where the corners and edges are darkened to leave a spherical light.

I'm not explaining it well, but if anyone understands what I'm ranting on about, it would be much appreciated if someone could help me to learn how to do this in CS3.

Thanks in advance. :)

There's probably 50 ways. The easiest is to dupe the layer, set it to multiply*, apply a layer mask and fill it with black. (So it hides the layer)

Then select your gradient tool and set the opacity to 35%. The type of gradient is foreground to transparent. (Color to checkerboard)

With your layer mask selected, "draw" with the gradient tool from the corners into the center multiple times. The more gradients you draw, the more of the dark layer is revealed. For the first example, draw several times in slightly different directions, but pretty much from the top down.

*You can use multiply, color burn, darken, or whatever gives yo the best look. You can also just take a color sample from the darkest area in the image and fill a new layer with this tint to achieve the same result.
