Yeah you need to have the figure on a separate layer to the bg. I only put the bg layer in so it was easier to see what was happening on the other layers.
The first thing that caught my eye is the opacity of the blur layer needs to be reduced. If you look closely at your original sample and mine the blur is a bit more transparent than the right hand side image, also the top image should be the full opaque image with the blur tool lightly applied to only the right hand edge. I can see some motion blur over the top of yours.
Other than that it looks pretty good. The only other thing that I can see is the distance of travel is less in yours, this may make a difference to the overall look.

There could be (I stress could, but hey, it's an additional effect! so whatever....)

You could add a pixel stretch effect and use blending modes to add depth to the image. Rather than clog up the web with my hackneyed text tutorial here's one from someone semi-literate.
