Hi there Everybody-

I am in need of some help. I am trying to do a tutorial I found in the July/August 2007 edition of Photoshop Usr Magazine. It is making a wedding templete on page 28. The first step says to open the imaget that you are using (which I did) and under the layers menu, select the "smart object" option.

My problem is that under my layers menu, I do not have a Smart Object" option. I can swear that I have done this before but it has been so long ago I can be for sure.

I am using photoshop CS and if my version is to old, can someone tell me if there is a different way of doing this setp?

Thanks for your time and effort, I greatly appriciate it.

Sincerely- Doug Ward

Hi dward1222,

Smart Objects were introduced in Photoshop CS2, so unfortunately your version is too old.

How to get round it depends on what the tutorial asks you to do with the smart object? Let us know and I'll see if I can help.

HI Matt-

thanks for the fast response, It is basicley asking to put a copy of the first picture over the same picture and resize the top picture to a smaller size and centered on the top of the photo, then you blur the background photo, and add a shaded border to the top photo for effects and thats about it. You can add some nice cursive text to the photos as well.

Please let me know if you need any clarification or more info. I was wondering, do you think if I just simply create a new layer, would that give me the options to do what I need and still apply the effects in the rest of the tutorial?

Thanks so much for your time on this.

Sincerely- Doug Ward

Yeah I'd say your suggestion is fine, smart objects are usually used in photographic work for keeping any effects that you add to the layer non-destructive. It's a good workflow because you can apply the blur (as an example) as a smart filter and it's always editable. Without smart objects and smart filters any filters you add to the image will be static adjustments, so once you've added a blur - it's there for good (forgetting history states of course).
Let me know if you need more info / help
