Hi all,

Is there a name for this background effect (ie the face etc) in the attached image? I can get this kind of look using the brush tool but can I start with any random image and make it into this kind of background?

Thank you

Yes, try using blending modes.

e.g Say you have a yellow background. Put your drawing on the layer above. Then look at the dropdown box at the top (it usually says "normal"). Change this to a different mode (e.g soft light, overlay). The drawing will blend in different ways with the yellow. You can also adjust the Opacity of the layer.

"Overlay" mode is a good one. You can also use it to blend a texture into the background and get some nice effects (like textured paper).

Good luck.
