Am messing around with images of people etc. Can anyone tell me where I can get my hands on some free cool filters that can add some great abstract effects etc. or are there any tutorials utilising the filters...

Filters (plug-ins) run the gamut from the very shmaltzy, to some very intricate photo correction. I think if you just Google "Photoshop filters", you'll find tons upon tons of sites that offer freebies, and a lot of others, that are worth throwing a few dineros at. (Machine Wash or Digital Gem for example)
