Title says all.
This is what im trying to do:

So yeah, i wanna get rid of the white background, while fading / reducing the transparency of the bear into the moon.
Step by step would be nice, im a major newbie to PS so yeah.

Just to add one more possibilty, use blending options. With gray selected from the dropdown box move the white slider on the top layer. Note: hold the option key to split the sliders for fine tuning.

Nicely done Hawkeye,
That option shipped with photo shop 3 or 5, and still hardly anyone knows about it, it is extremely powerful.
