so, in CS3 I could make a selections with the marquee tool and it would run over into the gray space around the pictures. In CS4 when I do the same thing it cuts off the selection at the edge of the image. Does anyone know how to change that?

Hi birdstheword,
The selection will still extend into the gray space in CS4, IF the gray space is canvas space. When you open a new image, any gray space around the document window is not really canvas area and the selection will not extend into it. If however, you go to Image > Canvas Size and increase the actual canvas, your selection will extend into the "gray space" (which will now be real canvas space).

Thank you so much for your reply!!
the only problem I have with making the canvas space larger is, when I go to save the image it has the white space around it, and that transfers over to my saved file......
Any more suggestions?
