I have the very latest version of Microsoft Office at work. The Word processing program saves files in a new format called .DOCX. This format is unlike anything. If I open a file in this format in a flat text reader it looks like garbage. I cannot even see the text that I typed. It is or seems to be encrypted. So if I write something at work and I send the file home, I cannot open it and work on it some more.

Does anyone know of any sort of conversion routine for a .DOCX file? I tried TextPad but it was complete garbage. I tried OpenOffice and it was just as bad. I tried an earlier version of Microsoft Word and there were page breaks and XML instructions but none of the text that I had written could be seen in the file.

Hello xarzu,

I have the latest version of Office, as well and I like it a lot, but I have noticed the issue, as well. However, it's very easily fixed. There are two good options that I know of:

First, you can save your documents as Word 97-2003 documents. From Office 2007, go to File > Save As and then as "Save as type", select "Word 97-2003 Document". From this point forward, the document will be saved in this format and you can open it with the older versions. (If you need to, you can also save it as plain text, rich text, etc., as well).

Now, if you'd rather save it in the .docx format still, that's fine, too. Install this compatibility pack on the machines running the older version of Word: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA100444731033.aspx

I have Office 2007 on my PC and then my family has Office 2000. I installed the compatibility pack with no problem at all and then they were able to open the documents.

Hopefully, that will get you on your way. :)

Thanks,

Patrick
