Hi everyone,
I have been working in photoshop for many years now. I received a light version (back before elements) as a Christmas gift a while back and most of the learning I have done has been from just using the program. However, I did take two pre high-school courses, one high-school level course, one college level course (in a photography department).
I am currently taking my second college level class (I switched my major to computer arts so this class is also entry level but slightly differently focused). My teacher has made a few statements that I have never heard before and am a little confused about. I was wondering if anyone could help me out. The two that stuck out most to me were:
1. Never use the magic wand tool, it's a waste of time because you'll probably end up spending more time correcting your wand than if you use something else. Also its unprofessional and professionals can not only see when you have used it but they will think less of you for it.
2. Professional's never use the color adjustment function as a way to color correct. Even Adobe says that you should not use this tool and there is no point.
In all my years this is the first time I've heard such a thing and I was wondering how true is this? I respect this teacher because for the most part, he knows his stuff. But statements like that seem a little farfetched especially in relation to the other classes I have taken and what I know about the program. I'm not saying these are my favorite tools or anything but I can think of many instances where both have helped me out. Am I wrong? |

With regards to the Magic Wand i'd have to agree...you'll spend more time cleaning it up since it does a rough blunt selection. Plus PS has so many other tools that work better.
Color adjustment function?..which is that?

whops sorry, color balance. I knew that sounded wrong
I agree to an extent with the magic wand, I just think that the way it was worded was pretty heavy handed, I think that there are some instances that using the magic wand tool might be very useful or even the best tool for the job, although there are plenty where it isn't ideal. |
