I'm going through the lessons in Kelby's 7 Point System and I'm trying to figure out why my layers panel is not resembling tutorial.
By creating a new adjustment layer via split ball icon at bottom of panel, and doing a curves adjustment, text shows adjustment layer with Curves icon and Mask icon. Same goes with adjustment with Photo Filter, showing Photo Filter icon and Mask icon.
When I follow directions, my adjustment layer shows the adjustment layer icon and mask icon, I also can't paint on the mask properly.
Why and how do I fix?

Thanks!!

Hi Snapshooter,

So you're having problems painting on the mask?

You need to select it in the layers palette before you can make any adjustments to it. Simply click the mask once to activate it, select the paint brush from the tools palette and paint either with a black, white or grey brush. To see the mask as you're painting you can ALT click it.

Hope this helps

Thanks Matt for the response.
Can you tell me why I'm getting the adjustment layer ball icon rather than the particular adjustment layer action icon ie curves, levels etc. pictured in my layers panel as shown in the tutorial I'm doing?

Right click the adjustment layer icon (not the mask) in the layers palette and select medium thumbnails.
