I'm trying to make an adjustment layer only affect the one layer directly below it, but everything I read about how to do it is not working.

I've unchecked the Affect all Layers box when I create my adjustment layer, and I've tried creating my own clipping mask by alt+clicking the line between the two layers, but instead of making it only affect the one layer, it just disables it and doesn't affect anything

Alt+click the area I circled on the example. A clipping mask will have a small arrow pointing down (as shown). Alternately, you can go to the tool bar and Layer-Create Clipping Mask.

I understand that, but my problem is that when I create the clipping mask, the adjustment layer seems to just disable. It doesn't affect any layers.
