There are many, many ways to do this. A good tutorial book will help you out a lot.
Here’s one method:
Open file in PS and make image a layer (double click on icon in layers palette, it will become Layer 0). A “background” image is locked and cannot be made transparent.
Go to Blending Options dialog (Layer>Layer Style>Blending Options) At the bottom of the dialog window you’ll see sliders under Blend if Gray. Move the right white slider to the left until amount of lighter pixels you want transparent disappear (replaced by a checker board pattern)
Go File>Save for Web and choose gif format. (png is a great format, but not supported by Internet Explorer) Only gif and png formats support transparency for the web.
