ok so for 2 years ive been on photo class in school and i learned photoshop, and only used point and shoot cameras. well now that i graduated high school i have decided i want to buy a cannon eos 7D so i started looking around flicker and realized the pictues people were taking with this camera were amazing!

ok well look at this photo for example, http://www.flickr.com/photos/cheishichiyo/5284210385/in/photostream/

Looks like HDR synthesized in Photoshop. But, with a thousand dollar camera and someone who knows how to use it, I would expect beautiful portraits. Creating some stunning "HDR" portraits in Photoshop can be done with practice. Its not true HDR, but the effect is still nice. To get true HDR images, youd have to take several photos at different exposures and combine them via software. In Photoshop, you can adjust exposure of one image and save it several times, using the combination of all images to create the HDR look. It really is difficult to achieve realistic results though. CS5 has a nice Automation feature called "Merge to HDR Pro" thats pretty slick.

That artist in your last post is just a great photographer. He does some photoshop work as well, obviously, but I'm able to see most of his editing. I dont think hes using photoshop to enhance the image quality in any way. If so, very little.

Actually, that's not true, about the last post. The breakdancing boy is obviously edited, but not the rest.

The last post with the boys are just good use of flashes. You can see the "dim" reflection by the octopus on the wall and one flash is even visible in the picture (to the right). The photo is then taken with a very high shutterspeed (something like 1000/1 or higher) to get great shadows and highlights out of the image.

As to the other photos, there is no "image" quality editing. There is just great lenses. And the one with the man from India is a great example of an fairly expensive lens (for Nikon, maybe it would be 50 mm f/1.4 or a even better lens like the 100-200 f/1.8-2.0). There is the difference of the image quality. A standard Kit-lens would never produce the same bokeh effect and not that crispiness in the hair.

I'm not saying a highpass filter hasn't been used, but the bottom line is that lenses make a huge difference.

From my personal view point, professionals do some work on photoshop to come up with stunning look photos, you gotta have a good understanding in adobe photoshop to manipulate photos :)
