Short answer: heck yes, they are!

I have an Intuos3 4x5, and it works great for me. I do digital painting and other miscellaneous work in Photoshop, and it's never let me down. The "small" size is not at all a problem. Pressure sensitivity allows me to work naturally as an artist and saves so much time. It feels just like working with a pen (albeit on a very smooth surface). The stylus itself is very comfortable to use, and the pad fits underneath my normal mousepad when not in use.

If you want to start painting digitally, you really need a tablet and should go for an Intuos. If you just want a tablet because they're cool, go with a less expensive Graphire (also from Wacom).

I am SOOOO going to buy one of these this weekend. Circuit city is selling a 4x5 Wacom for $100. I'm ALL OVER IT! :P They sound sooooo cool, and it'd definately open doors for me as far as designing stuff.
