I'm working on a compostion where a bus is parked in the desert, and I want to make tracks in the sand where the bus has been. I've been experimenting, but I haven't come up with anything believable yet.

Create the tracks for the bus and then apply a downwards emboss using layer styles.
After this reduce the fill of the layer to 0. This will leave you with only the shadows and highlights in the sand.

These tracks are great! Thanks Auieos. I'll give that technique a try now, it might be useful for other effects as well.

While we are at it, what's the difference between layer fill and layer opacity?

He's not just a pretty face ;)

With the technique Auieos has used, it allows the overall opacity to remain while the fill is made 'invisible' the great thing is that layer styles and effects still remain.

Cheers for that Hermit.

Yeah comes in handy that one.

I wasn't sure about other things fill can be used for so i had a quick look and...

Layer Styles and Blend Modes, that seems to be it.

Never tried different blend modes with fill adjustments myself.
